Want to know what this Japan thing is all about? I spent two years in Japan teaching English to high school students in a small town in Okayama, Japan. To help give you some perspective on where Okayama is, you’ll find it between Hiroshima and Osaka – making it an ideal location for weekend trips. I was part of the Japanese Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program and helped “promote grassroots globalization.” My day job was assisting language teachers in the classroom, but outside of that I participated in festivals, other community events, and everyday activities that one can only truly experience by living there. In exchange for that I was the token ugly American in town (I joke) who wanted everything bigger, wondered where all the guns were, and became all-too-reliant on the convenience store sushi packs. It was hands-down the best experience I’ve had and I would recommend it to anyone.
Feel free to ask any questions or comment on your own experiences, I’d love to hear ‘em.
